NAME
asa - Interprets carriage-control characters
SYNOPSIS
asa [file ...]
STANDARDS
Interfaces documented on this reference page conform to industry stan-
dards as follows:
asa: XPG4, XPG4-UNIX
Refer to the standards(5) reference page for more information about in-
dustry standards and associated tags.
FLAGS
[XPG4-UNIX] None
PARAMETERS
[XPG4-UNIX] The pathname of a file to be read. If this parameter is
omitted, standard input is read.
DESCRIPTION
[XPG4-UNIX] The asa command writes its input files to standard output,
mapping carriage-control characters from the text files to line-printer
control sequences.
[XPG4-UNIX] The first character of every input line is removed and,
depending on the character removed, an action performed on that charac-
ter and the rest of the line. If the character removed is:
[XPG4-UNIX] The rest of the line is output without change.
[XPG4-UNIX] A newline character is output, followed by the rest of the
input line. [XPG4-UNIX] A form-feed character is output, followed by
the rest of the input line. [XPG4-UNIX] The newline character of the
previous line is replaced with a carriage-return character, which is
output, followed by the rest of the input line. If + is the first char-
acter in the input, + has the same effect as the space character.
[Digital] The character is output, followed by the rest of the input
line.
ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
The following environment variables affect the execution of asa:
[XPG4-UNIX] Provides a default value for the internationalization
variables that are unset or null. If LANG is unset or null, the corre-
sponding value from the default locale is used. If any of the interna-
tionalization variables contain an invalid setting, the utility behaves
as if none of the variables had been defined. [XPG4-UNIX] If set to a
non-empty string value, overrides the values of all the other interna-
tionalization variables. [XPG4-UNIX] Determines the locale for the
interpretation of sequences of bytes of text data as characters (for
example, single-byte as opposed to multi-byte characters in arguments
and input files). [XPG4-UNIX] Determines the locale for the format
and contents of diagnostic messages written to standard error.
[XPG4-UNIX] Determines the location of message catalogues for the pro-
cessing of LC_MESSAGES.
EXAMPLES
To view a file (created by a program using FORTRAN-style carriage con-
trol characters) on a terminal:
asa file To format the FORTRAN output of a.out and direct it to
the printer:
a.out | asa | lp
EXIT VALUES
The following exit values are returned:
[XPG4-UNIX] Successful completion [XPG4-UNIX] An error occurred
